Goodbye Windows, hello Apple!

goodbye-windows-hello-apple

Yes, I’ve officially switched over to the Mac side (my Window loving friends call it the dark side, lol )! As some of you might know, my poor yet poop of a laptop died on me the other day and refused to boot. The recovery disk that came with the laptop didn’t work, probably because it was a burned copy. Ghetto much?

Anyways, I’ve been eying the Macbook Pro for a while now, since it’s one of the top recommended laptops for doing design work, and the day came sooner than I expected that I would get my hands on one of these babies. I ended up getting the 15″ Macbook Pro with 2.53GHz and 4gb DDR 3 ram. I was able to get the college student discount, which means $100 off the laptop PLUS a free Ipod Touch and all-in-one printer. Needless to say, I’ve never been this happy that a computer of mine crashed :P

Some people say Mac is overrated, but those that use it love it. I don’t blame them, but then again, to quote a friend, “any computer I buy would’ve been better than the piece of crap from before”. Touche. Now I’m just waiting to get the salvaged files from my old laptop before I can fully go back to designing :) Error processing request

Movie reviews and some more

movie-reviews-and-some-more

Ok, I know I haven’t been active with blogging lately, but business is booming at Wing Stranger Productions like none other, so that, plus my internship, has been keeping me on my toes. Well, those things and spending time with friends, hence, 3 more reviews:

Brunoo_o -_- -_- -_- :D
I had a lot of mixed feelings when watching this movie, but as you can see from my rating, it was mostly feelings of disgust. Seriously, I felt like I was watching bad porno more than half of the time, and other parts, I was either laughing at the very uncreative jokes they repeated from Borat or in a state of aftershock from the amount of obscene nudity. The shock factor was definitely there, but the good movie factor wasn’t. FAIL.

Public Enemies*_* *???* -_- -_- -_-
The yum icon is simply there because seriously, Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, how can you not go :9? Gave it one confused icon because, well, I was confused. So John Dillinger (played by Johnny Depp) just sees this girl, and the next minute he decides he’s in love with her? That and lots of other small things that I don’t remember because I was too busy trying to stay awake. If I had to use one word to describe this movie, it’d be BORING. I wanted to leave the theater and was so relieved when the movie finally ended. In other words, the eye candy was not worth a long boring confusing plot.

Huan Zhu Ge Ge<3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Aka, Princess of the Returning Pearl, or Princess Huan Zhu. For those of you who watch Asian dramas, this is an effin classic. My friend got me the dvd of the first season, and I’ve been watching it nonstop since, many times. Seriously, I’d say that other dramas were good, but I’d never watch them again and again. But this? This stuff is just too damn good. Seriously, go watch it, now. I command you.

Ok, so the last one wasn’t a movie review, but it was just too good to not share with people.

summer movie reviews pt2

I did a summer movie review last month, and now it’s time for part 2!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen o_o o_o o_o o_o :D
Am I one of the few people who actually thought this moving was effing amazing with just the right amount of humor at just the right time? Maybe I feel this way because of the disappointing reviews I’ve read and I went into the theater with rather low expectations. Granted, the plot can be confusing from time to time, but overall the movie had me holding my breath and clenching my fist the entire time, in a good way.

The Proposal :D :D :D :D   :3
Typical romantic comedy/chick-flick, but an excellent one at that. It’s definitely got its share of laughing moments with just the right amount of cute moments that make you go “Aww”. Watch it with a friend or watch it with your boyfriend, it’s all good, but definitely go watch it.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs :3 :3 :3 :3 :D
I never saw the first 2 Ice Age films, so I can’t compare, but I gave it 4 :3 faces because of the 4 babies in the movie: they were SO adorable! Asides from that, the movie was ok. There were a few funny moments, but just a few. See it if you want, but if you don’t, I won’t hold it against you either. You are forgiven :P

Extra entertainment tidbit: Hilary Duff has been cast to appear in Gossip Girl season 3 as a movie star who wants to live the regular college life. Did I also mention that she’ll be Vanessa’s roomie in NYU and has her eyes set on Dan? This should be an interesting season.

Some more extra non-entertainment related tidbit: My portfolio is now located at Wing Stranger Production, and I’ll be moving my tutorials there and posting them there from now on. Give it some love!

Using custom fonts on your site

using-custom-fonts-on-your-site

UPDATE: The better alternative for this would be the @font-face method, which I discuss in “Improved custom fonts on your site“. The Cufon method is still viable, but I personally no longer use it.

As you can see, the headers for my posts and sidebars use a font that obviously isn’t the standard (boring) Arial, Verdana, or Times New Roman. There are several methods to use any font you wish on your website, including a plugin for WordPress. However, the plugin didn’t work for me, and the other methods were too complicated, so I’ll be sharing with you the method I used this time.

  1. Download Cufon
    Click the download link on the Cufon site and save the file onto your computer.
  2. Choose Your Font
    On the Cufon site, you can upload the font you’d like to use on your own website and it will convert the font into a .js file. Click browse, and choose the font you want to use.
  3. Choose Your Options
    Under “Include the following glyphs”, don’t select all, as it will make the .js file very big. Choose the ones you need, but for me, I just chose the next 5 options available after “All”.
  4. Convert Your Font
    Scroll through the rest of the page, make sure you accept the terms, then click on “Let’s Do This” to convert your font into a .js file. Save this new file where you saved the Cufon file earlier in Step 1.
  5. Upload the .JS Files
    Upload both the .JS files to the directory where your blog is located. So if your blog is located in the root directory, upload those 2 files there. If it’s located in a folder called “blog”, upload the files into the blog folder.
  6. Using the Script
    In order to call the script, you will need to add the following code before the </body> tag:
    <script type="text/javascript" src="js/cufon-yui.js"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="js/YOUR_FONT_NAME.font.js"></script>
  7. Which Text to Replace
    Now you need to decide which texts you want to replace using this custom font. For me, I replaced all the text in my <h2> headers, so I would need to place the following code just before my </body> as well:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    Cufon.replace('h2');
    </script>
  8. Because IE Sucks
    You’ll need to add another code (along with the ones earlier) to make sure the font loading isn’t delayed:
    <script type="text/javascript"> Cufon.now(); </script>

That’s it! It might seem like a lot of steps, but each step is really simple and easy to achieve. You can still change the color of the custom fonts via css, it just so happens that I wanted my headers to be black. Now if you only want the text within the sidebar section of your site changed, simply change the Cufon.replace('h2'); to Cufon.replace('#sidebar h2');

To use 2 different custom fonts on your site, simply repeat the above steps with the second font, making you add the code to the footer as well so that BOTH fonts are called. Next, you will need to define which font you want to apply to each element. So you will need to expand the code from Cufon.replace('#sidebar h2'); to:
Cufon.replace('#sidebar h2', {font-family: 'YOUR FONT NAME' });

Tada! Custom fonts for your headers! :)

All Eyes On Me

all-eyes-on-me

Continuing the tradition that Jenny has started, I’ve shamelessly requested an interview from her, to which she has asked five questions. But before that, here’s a meme that Ongaku tagged me in, so let me start with 10 facts you probably didn’t know about me. Kudos to you if you knew one or more of these:

  1. I ran away from home at the age of 3 by climbing down 5 flight of stairs (we lived in an apartment) before my uncle found me in the middle of the street.
  2. I have had graves disease since sophomore year of high school.
  3. My first website ever was a Pokemon site, filled with stolen images from other Pokemon sites. I didn’t know it was illegal back then :(
  4. I am one of the biggest cry babies you’ll ever meet. I cry, very easily.
  5. I like the smell of paint and super glue and permanent markers.
  6. When something is wrong, I tend to hold it in until I can’t stand it anymore, then I’ll just explode without warning, right in your face. Sorry!
  7. Despite what other people might think, I’m very insecure and and self-conscious. I’m constantly seeking other people’s approval.
  8. Hence, I admire true Christians that don’t care about conforming to the world’s standards and just live their lives for God.
  9. I was thinking about getting a nose job before coming to the US, but I chickened out last minute because I was scared of the pain.
  10. Even after 9 years,  I still think Yamato Ishida from Digimon is the cutest guy in anime history :3

I’m too lazy to tag people, so if you want to do the meme, go ahead and do it. Yay for memes! Now for the 5 interview questions from Jenny:

  1. How did you come up with the name of your blog?
    This was an old name I used for my blog back in 2001, and I started using it again because of my returned admiration for the anime heroine it was named after: Mimi Tachikawa from Digimon. Super Girl was one of her theme songs from the series, and I really identified with the lyrics:

    Why are you always, always running away?
    If you’re always afraid of making mistakes, you can’t do anything.
    No matter how many times you get discouraged, it’s still OK, isn’t it?
    Try believing in yourself and the road will be opened to you.
    No matter what hard times you have, you should laugh with a smile.
    Say “Goodbye” to the crybaby you, someday you’ll be a Super Girl!

  2. Are you a fan of the super cute?
    Yes, though I think I’m growing out of the phase. I know I used to LOVE buying my school supplies from Taiwan because of the cute characters they’d have on them.
  3. Are you a Gossip Girl fan?
    Yes! I love the show and the characters, but above all, I love the fashion. My current style is a mix between the girlyness of Blair Waldorf with a hint of the boho chic of Serena van der Woodsen. Not only does their fashion inspire me, but their lifestyle as well, though it is hard to pull it off when your parents aren’t raking in millions by the day :(
  4. What do you think of the whole Twilight fan fetish going around lately?
    Honestly, I could care less about it. As a matter of fact, I find it quite annoying because it consists mostly of teeny-boppers, the one social group I cannot stand. I was a little psyched about the movie at first because Edward looked quite sexy, but Kristin Stewart was a BIG no no for me. For some reason, she really annoys me  (sorry Bella/Kristin fans!). So no, I’ve never watched the movie or read the books, and don’t plan to anytime soon. This whole Twilight thing is overrated in my opinion.
  5. Do you agree that these questions could have been more creative? ;)
    Actually, I was expecting the typical “so what made you decide to start blogging?” or “tell me about your experience as a web designer” kind of questions, so I already think these are pretty creative c:

Well, that’s enough of me to last you guys months probably, so I’ll stop. But for those of you interested in carrying on the interviewing tradition, just leave a comment saying “interview me” and I’ll reply with 5 questions of my choice, which you will answer in your next blog post. And in that post, you will offer your readers a chance to get interviewed by you, so the tradition may continue. Yay for traditions!
