Blogging pet peeves pt2

Off topic, but thank you all so much for the encouragements and comments to my first video :D I was very tempted to do another video review on my NYX products (which I love btw), but I do want to alternate between topics, so without further ado, here’s the part 2 to my blogging pet peeves:

  • replying to MY comments on THEIR entries on MY site

If you want to reply to my comments on your entries, please do so on your OWN site. And if you’re going to reply to it on my site, at least have the courtesy to comment on my entry as well? My comment form is not your personal guestbook or whatnot, so please don’t treat it like so. I don’t really care if you don’t reply to my comments, but when you reply to them on my blog, I get confused and I’m just like “wtf is this??” -_-

  • using comment forms as contact forms

I have a contact form for a reason: it’s so you can contact me. I have a comment form for another reason: it’s so you can comment on the said blog post. All I’m asking for is that you use the forms for the appropriate purpose. Is that really too much to ask? Are you really that lazy?

  • writing your entry like a college essay

This isn’t so much a pet peeve as the rest of the ones on the list, but damn are these entries tedious to read. Maybe it’s just me, but I prefer blogs to be enjoyable and easy reads, as in, they’re NOT filled with SAT words. I guess my reading level is just not awesome like that, but seriously, why so serious?

  • not hiding your sponsored posts

As in, I don’t want them to show up on my Google Reader or when I visit your blog. Well, I’m sure most people feel the same, and the truth is, you can hide sponsored posts without breaking the rules. There are over 200 sponsored posts in my blog, but I bet you had no idea, huh? ;)

  • blogs left for dead without warning

This makes me more sad than peeved, especially if it seemed to be an interesting/insightful blog. I either find these babies months or years after they’ve been neglected or they just suddenly disappear on me without warning. No tweets, no nothing. It’s just gone, and it’s never coming back :(

Please don’t take any of the above peeves personally, even if you have done one or more. I have nothing against anyone as a person, only the actions.Error processing request

I definitely think that it's confusing when people reply to my comment on their page in a post on my website. <..> But then again, I kind of wonder if people read my replies when I reply on my own website… That's why I decided to add "recent comments" to my widgets. (That's how I noticed Ongaku would sometimes reply to my comments on her site, lol ).

    Who writes their entry like a college essay? <.<;

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Ok, I guess I can see that. But at least try to read my entry too? And if you REALLY don't want to read it, yet want me to read your reply, then just email me your reply? Must you really use my comment form for YOUR replies?

  • http://snowlilly.net Mary

Eeep! I haven't had a chance to watch your video but I will soon! (When I'm on a computer with speakers XD )

Definitely agreeing with a lot of these. Especially the essay one.

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Oh yay, you're back :D Yeah, I can't stand reading long posts, especially when it's all text and no pictures.

  • http://essencious.org Krystal

I've been watching all your videos on your youtube channel. I've subscribed to you. It's so nice to see that you've been adding loads of new videos, excited for more :D

I totally understand about the first two pet peeves because I feel exactly the same.

I get really sad when my regulars leave the blogging world without a word. It was so nice to read their entries regularly and suddenly they just disappear :(

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

      Yay, thanks for subscribing :D

What happens to me is that I'd stumble upon an awesome blog, only to see that the last entry was from 2008 -___-

  • http://justjennifer.me Jenny

OMG the last one definitely. You know how many of my comments link to dead or abandoned blogs? I started cleaning them out lately though (when I go through the list and revisit & comment). It's sad too 'cause most of them were good blogs.

    • http://essencious.org Krystal

I listed many of the bloggers that I like and visit often but a few of them haven't blogged in a long time, so sad :( I really hate it when people leaves, especially when you just started to get to know that person well >.<

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Yeah, I do the same sometimes, and every once in a while, you find those people again randomly, and that's always nice. But yeah, those moments are rare :(

  • http://blog.muggle-girl.com Jessica

WOW! I cant believe ive finally met someone who thinks the same as i do! I totally agree with you on the first one…it annoys me sooo much when i visit a site and they have like 50 comments and i see them, think "wow she has a lot of visitors" and it is only like 5 or 6 people just commenting back and forth, having a conversation through comments!

it is so annoying and ugh, i dont really know why it annoys me so much, lol

i agree with you completely on the other things you wrote, except the second to last because i dont know what sponsered posts are? but yeah haha definitely coming back here to read more of your entries! :-)

    love your layout btw!

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Sponsored posts are posts you are paid to write, and it usually contains links and reviews of another site.

I’m ok with people commenting back and forth and doing whatever, as long as it’s not on MY blog -_-

  • http://www.carnelianvalley.com/blog Charlie

I haven't written any sponsored ones but I wasn't aware you could hide posts.

Every now and then I've written essay-like entries, though I don't think they've made it to being published yet. They tend to be on topics that require it though. It's weird, I love the idea of long literary posts but actually reading them is a different story.

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

I didn't know I could hide them at first either, but then Google smacked my PR down to O and I was personally sick of all these ugly useless posts filling up the front page of my blog, so I figured I needed to do something about it, lol .

I do agree that certain topics require a longer post and perhaps more mature choice of words, so it really comes down to me not wanting to read about those kinda things I guess? I mean, this is supposed to be a hobby for me, why so serious? lol

  • http://blog.muggle-girl.com Jessica

ahh im such a hypocrite i think because im gonna write you back on the comment you left me…lmao i guess its hard NOT to do when you really wanna say something! haha…oopsies sorry in advance if i annoy you :-(

anyways, yes i totally think you should drag your boyfriend along. i saw the reviews as well and i dont know why it didnt get very good ones. i thought the movie was cute…but then again, all those movie reviewers are old stiff guys who dont know anything, lol jk

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Lol, it's forgiven since you actually bothered to read my post and comment on it before this :P

But yeah, I might drag him this weekend, hehehe.

  • http://cutenerd.prettyintokyo.com Risa

lol i've been guilty of a few of those xD

I rather comment back on my website than drag the comment here…to me it's kinda rude when someone comments with something you said on their post..I get annoyed too usually because I don't even remember my comment >.<

    Your hiding sponsored posts??

I need tips xD I was thinking of getting involved in it so I have some mini income.

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Really? I don't think any of the blogs I read regularly have these, or else I probably couldn't be arsed to read them, lol .

You can read my 2 tutorials on how to hide sponsored posts from your blog's main page and from your RSS feed, so that way you can make money without peeving your readers.

  • http://me.battalglia.org Jennifer

I have to agree with you on most of these! Especially the college-essay ones. Come on, at least make it interesting! I hate being greeted by huge walls of text, too. Not that I don't care, it's just that's a lot of text, you know!

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

THANK YOU. I mean, even if it's interesting, the big ol' wall is kinda intimidating, especially now that my brain is in summer mode. A lot of text = huge turnoff, lol

  • http://patjissi.net Patji

I think that one of these may apply to me? Lol. Not sure. But I do agree with you on all your pet peeves.

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Really? Lol, your blog seems fine to me? Haha, if we had to speak strictly, some of these might even apply to myself.

  • http://www.silent-white.com/ Cat

The contact form and reply thing bothers me if that's all they do, and don't even comment on the actual entry itself. Seems kind of rude to leave a comment but not read the blog =/ I agree with the college essay thing too. I feel like some people try too hard? Kind of takes the fun out of it!

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Yes, that's it exactly, they're trying to hard. I guess it's nice if you're trying to impress your college professors, but short & funny definitely beats long & wordy by a long shot.

As for the comment thing, yeah, that is just downright rude.

  • http://paddling-geek.net Kimm

I can understand replying an answer on your personal blog but I can't get myself around the whole idea of just leaving the answer on someone else blog, why not email them and mention it that way.. It shows that you care about your readers..

When blog posts get way to personal and super long/college essay style I just stop reading.

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

I don't get it either, but apparently that's what quite a few people do. I would really like to know what their logic behind that is.

Yeah, the personal thing is also annoying, so annoying it made it to my part 1 list, lol

  • http://documentarystorm.com Marina

Completely agree. i've actually stopped commenting on some people's blogs because they have a habit of replying to it on my blog post -.- Then I have to either delete the reply or leave it there for people to wonder what it is about >_<

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

I always feel bad for deleting people's comment (unless it's outright spam), but yeah, I just stop commenting on their site as well.

PS. Love the documentaries you have on your site, they're great :D

  • http://crazy-cordy.net Courtney

I sometimes reply to people's comments on their blog but I reply to their blog post first. It is VERY annoying, I agree, when someone just replies to your comment and not your blog. It's like, "here, I have time to respond to your comment that you were nice enough to read my blog, but I don't have time to read yours" Pretty much an insult. I am always afraid that people don't return to my site though and see my replies to their comments on there… so sometimes i do a little of both lol

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Ah, ok, that's understandable. I sometimes wonder if people see my replies as well, but I do have a little checkbox that allows interested people to get an email notification if they're interested.

  • http://blog.oridusartic.com/ Oridusartic

LOL the "blogs left for dead without warning" part kinda slap me on my cheek. But fear not, I don't feel your entry is offensive. It is true actually and you're making lots of good points there. ^^

I also agree with the "entry like a college essay" part since I enjoy blogs with photos or drawings. Shame on my poor reading skill… (-_-)

I think a blog entry is more enjoyable if it's powered with pictures, video, drawing, illustration and the length should also be friendly for readers.

And yeah a comment should be related with the blog entry or else it would be pointless. Whoa! Looks like I am totally agree with you on these points. xD

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Oh no, I definitely didn't mean you when I brought up point #5. I do remember you saying that your entries got deleted somehow and you were starting over?

That's one reason why I love reading your blog, it's always filled with such great illustrations or photos :D

  • http://creative-suites.com Delia

Oh it can be so confusing when someone replies on your website about a comment you left on their entry. I think that has to be my number blogging peeve.

    Ahaha, I've actually committed essay like blog entries before. Once I start ranting, I can never seem to stop… I try to keep the length as reader-friendly as possible nowadays. ^_^ ;

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Yeah, I get confused sometimes when people just reply to my comment on my site, because I usually don’t remember what I wrote -_-

It’s not really the length I mind, but more of the word choice. I really feel like I’m reading a thesis or a business proposal -_-

  • http://lifeasrose.ca Rose

#1 Bothers me too, but I think a lot of people just do things that way, so I try not to get too too upset about it :P

#3 – Well yeah, I guess I'd agree there. I mostly don't read ANY blogs though, except web dev articles & dooce & a few friends.

…And everybody hates a dead blog. I hate it when I read an entry and I'm all "ooh! I have a comment to say about that!" … And then notice that it was written back in 2004.
