Say hello to Shelly

Living on my own, 7000 miles away from my parents is pretty cool for the most part, and at first I was worried that I’d get lonely when I’m at home by myself, the dilemma was solved when Shelly showed up in my life :3

Shelly is my 1-year old domestic short hair cat. My boyfriend adopted her from a lady who had more cats than she knew how to deal with. So Cookie 1, once an outdoors only cat, became my Shelly2, all while I was still in Taiwan. Seriously, if it weren’t for the fact that I had her to look forward to, I might have just stayed in Taiwan for good instead.

Shelly being a typical cat :)

My boyfriend and I never really thought of ourselves as cat people3, but Shelly definitely changed our minds. Sure I’ve gotten my fair share of clawing and scratching, but the moment she starts purring and cuddling, I just give in. She’s also surprisingly good at keeping company. Whether I’m in my room on my laptop or watching TV in the living room, she’ll always stay close by, if not on my lap :)

You know, now that I have a cat, I can see why people would want to own 5 or even 10 of these pets. They’re a lot more interesting and affectionate than you’d expect!Error processing request

  1. Shelly’s original name
  2. Cookies to whoever can guess what I named her after! Hint: think TV shows.
  3. We both love dogs, especially golden retrievers

Aww, she's adorable! I was never a cat person either until Tavi adopted us. They're much easier to care for than dogs, too – while I'd love to get a dog at some point, it just wouldn't be fair to leave it at home all day while we're in school/working. The cats don't seem to care, though, as long as they get attention while we're home!

My boyfriend and I both love golden retrievers, but like you said, leaving a dog (and such an active breed at that) at home all day is cruel :( Cats are definitely more independent in that sense!

She's gorgeous! Yes, pets of all kinds are addictive. How is she adjusting from being an outdoor cat? Or do you let her out a lot? Just curious, because I had a friend who tried to indoor and outdoor cat and failed miserably. haha

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

We actually don't let her out because 1) we're scared she's gonna run away and we'd never be able to catch her 2) she actually contracted mites in her ear as a result of living outdoors, and we had to put drops in her ear every night. Not fun -_- She's actually adjusting fine to being an indoors cat, though I can tell she would love to romp around outdoors if she could, lol

Naaw, what a cutie <3 I love her colours! Cats are adorable, a home isn't really a home without a cat ;) I for one have always loved both cats and dogs equally, and I have one of each living with me right now :P

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Do your cat and dog get along with each other? My boyfriend and I always joke that if we were ever to get a dog, Shelly would definitely pick on him/her, lol .

      • http://www.rockwitch.net Karin

The dog likes cats, he's used to them since he was a puppy and the cat is… OK with the dog. She doesn't try to kill him, but she doesn't want to play with him either ;)

She's such a cute cat! I like the photo of her peeking out from under the covers.

I hope you don't feel too homesick.

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Haha, yes! My boyfriend and I are contemplating who we should name our second cat (if we ever get one) after. We're leaning towards Wolowitz, haha.

eee!!! Shelly is sooo cute!! I love cats! I'm like a weird crazy cat lady! hahaha But I don't have any cats of my own yet. *SAD*

How old is shee? She looks like 2 years old :D cause she looks small in the pic.

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Aww, why not? She actually just turned 1, but she's still a growing girl apparently o_o Hopefully she doesn't get too fat, haha!

People are either dog-lovers or cat-lovers but I'm just a no-pets-please hands down.

However I've just moved to a new neighborhood, and my neighbor owns an outdoor cat. She recognizes me now and just comes to headbutt me whenever she sees me. It's so affectionate and adorable. She's a grey cat, so her coloring is nowhere as cool as Shelly's. :P

I don't think I'd ever want any pets but I wouldn't mind playing with other people's pets. If they're friendly.

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Owning a pet can be a lot of work, and I know people (mainly my parents, haha) who are strictly no-pets-please as well. Most cats I've met so far (including Shelly) are a lot more affectionate and friendly than what the stereotype makes them out to be. It's cute how your neighbors cat greets you with a headbutt :)

Your cat looks so adorable! To be honest, i'm more of a dog lover than cat lover but it's nice to hear that cats can be affectionate pets too :P usually i have the impression they just run away when you try to pet them hahahh

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

I used to think the same thing! Maybe it varies from cat to cat, but so far most cats I've met are actually surprisingly friendly!

  • http://blog.tinasol.net Tina

    Shelly is so cute xD  Both the cat and the name which totally is from BBT ! I love cats the most, always wanted one but both my father and sister are allergic ;__;

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Hahaha, yes! Sheldon is my favorite character after all, so it'd only do justice to name my first cat after him :P Sorry to hear that your dad and sister are allergic :( Maybe you'll be able to get one when you live on your own?

Okay, now that I've been able to stop myself from petting my computer screen, I can type a comment. XD

What a sweet kitty! So glad she's settled in well and that she's helping with the loneliness factor. Kitties are especially good at curling up in your lap when you need a good cuddle.

(And because I couldn't resist: "Cat, I'm a kitty cat, and I dance dance dance and I dance dance dance." XD )

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Haha, yes, especially now that it's cold we sometimes curl together on the bed during our afternoon naps! :)

  • http://stepherz.org Stephanie

Aw, she's so cute! Shelly is such a cute name. Is she a cuddler?

I couldn't imagine not having cats; I'd be so lonely! Glad she's making your life less lonely! :)

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

She is when she's in her calm, mellow mood and it's just so cute because she'll put her paws on you as if she's hugging your arm (or you) :3

  • http://www.silent-white.com/ Cat

Aww, Shelly is adorable! I love the colors of her fur! That's so cute how she keeps you company. I wish I wasn't so allergic to cats D=

I've only owned a kitten for a brief time of my life. I didn't have much experience with it to say that I like cats, so without a doubt I'm a dog person. xp

My ex however did have a cat and we got along fine, probably because she was a kitten and very easy to get along with. When I read random blog posts like these about owners and how they feel about their feline buddies it makes me re-think my position about my 'dogs only' persona, so hey, maybe one day I'll owe it to all you cool bloggers for having my own kitty!

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

I feel like with cats and dogs, you never really know until you sort of jump right into it and actually own one. I never imagined myself to be a cat-person before, but look at me now, lol .

  • http://nanyate.com Ivy

Super cute!!!! I love cats. They have a lot of personality once you get to know them well.

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Definitely! They do some of the most curious things, which makes you wonder what's really going on inside their heads!

  • http://essencious.org Krystal

Awww your cat is super cute!

When I move out, I want to get a little puppy ^^ I'm more of a dog person.

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Ooo, what kind of puppy? :D I wish I had the time for a puppy, it's been a dream of mine since I was a kid :(

      • http://essencious.org Krystal

I really want a small pomeranian, they are just so cute. It is a lot of effort looking after pets, especially baby ones. Have to teach them so many things.

  • http://www.panikku.com Ongaku

AAAWWWW she is so cute!! I love kitties. I have three of my own and they are all such pains in the butts, but I love them anyway! xD

    • http://riyuu.org Jenny

Haha, I feel like 1 cat is already keeping my hands full, so I can't imagine 3 cats! It must be fun watching them interact with each other :D
