The Smiley Face With Many Chins

I don’t know if you’ve ever had to misfortune to come across people who write like this:

Blah blah blah!!!!!!!! Blah blah : DDDDDDD BLAH!!!!!!! blah blah blah blah : ]]]]]] Blah!!!!

I’ve seen this (along with some awfully butchered Japanese1) in an anime forum I used to own, but I get that, because it was a message board filled with tween anime fangirls/Japanese wannabes. Now after several years, I’m starting to see the return of the stuck shift+ 1 key and the smiley faces with too many chins. Not from teeny-bopper-anime-fangirls-who-think-they’re-Japanese-but-actually-aren’t, but from college kids. College girls in particular. A special someone of mine has recently had his facebook wall spammed with such posts:

OMGOMGOMG!!!! BEACH!!!!!!! I long to see some real sun!!!!
anywayys haha JONATHAN take me skiiing too : ]]]]
AHHHHHH!!!! Ice Cream = I Scream!!!!
!!!!!!horseback riding!!!!! : DDDD

I’m not even going to go into the fact that I will bitchslap and pull the hair of these girls when I see them for being too friendly with the wrong guy. Seriously though, I understand you’re excited, which is why you’d use an “!” instead of “.”. Heck, you might even use 2 “!” or even 3. But anymore than that and having it occur more than once in a sentence is totally moronic and unacceptable, unless your keys really did get stuck.

Second, what is up with : DDDDD or : ]]]]]] or any smiley face with way too many smiles? Do you have any idea how retarded it looks? I’ll tell you what I think: I think you’re smiley face is FAT and has too many chins and needs to call Jenny Craig ASAP. For crying aloud, you are in college, not middle school anymore. Doing this does not make you look cute or pretty or anything positive for that matter. It just makes you look like you need to spend some grammar time with Momo-chan2. Maybe then you’ll learn how to use punctuations properly.

PS. Out of anger and spite for those silly girls, I wrote the following on his wall:

your wall posts makes me happy <3
can’t wait till saturday :)
ps. i’m tempted to add “!!!!!!!:DDDDD!!!!!!”, but i didn’t want to look like idiot.

  1. Adding “nya” or “kya” to the end of every sentence, adding “desu” to the end of every word, writing “sugoi” or “kawaii” in inappropriate places, oh the list goes on and on.
  2. Referring to my icon. That’s Momoshiro from the anime Prince of Tennis.

Ugh. That “typing” is right up there with the Z instead of an S and HAWT! instead of Hot. Ugh. I hate idiots.

    • Mimi says:

Oh yes, that annoys me, too. Isn’t it much easier to type hot instead of hawt anyways? :?

  2. Kaylee says:

I used to add a few extra chins to my smiley faces when I was younger :( I don’t do it any more, though, and I never typed THAT many.

    • Mimi says:

I think a lot of people went through the fat smiley face phase at some point in life, and most people get over it by the time they’re 20, but I guess some people just don’t learn… -_-

  3. Dayna says:

I only use a maximum of 3 exclamation marks together for emphasis. I think 2 of them looks weird so I always use either 1 or 3. I hate it when people use a full stop right before an exclamation mark like .! That is so annoying.

Dayna´s last blog post..Some random drama rants

    • Mimi says:

Haha, same with me! Why would you put a period before an exclamation mark to begin with? It doesn’t even make sense.

  4. anne says:

lmao your so funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) )))))))))

    • Mimi says:

      i know right? hehehehe!!!!!!! XDDDDD

  5. Tin says:

Ahaha, I really really like your entries! It’s not that I hate multiply exclamation marks and smiley chins, but I don’t do it either. It makes the sentence ugly and the person sound like a moron. XD I limit myself to typing up to 3 exclamation marks and a normal-looking smiley. XD

What I hate big time are sticky caps and text-typing. Ugh.

    Tin´s last blog post..Rainbowscraps Makeover

    • Mimi says:

Thanks :) I agree that it makes you sound like a moron, especially if you’re already in college. I actually don’t see sticky caps around all that much anymore. Never understood why people used them… they’re such a pain to type!

  6. Destiny says:

Oh man, that’s a lot of !!!! in a few lines!! I use !!! sometimes a lot to heighten expressions but not by that much!!! haha, you’re probably getting sick of mine as well, but I agree… why the DDDDD and the ]]]]]] who knows why they like to do that, maybe their key got stuck.
Yuck… I used to use the word “kawaii” a lot, until a lot of teenyboppers use them now… now I get sick of seeing that word, if I see it on a blogsite, I automatically close that site.

    • Mimi says:

I can understand if you’re really excited about something and you use !!!, but using too many at once just makes me wonder if you’ve been sniffing anything funny.
I used to use kawaii a lot as well, but yeah, too many people use them inappropriately now that I don’t even bother anymore.

  7. Sylvia says:

LOL! That’s just about as bad as girls who “TyPe LiiKe ThiiS” I can’t stand that mess!

    • Mimi says:

I never got the whole TyPe LiiKe ThiiS thing. Isn’t it hard and time consuming to type like that? Why? *shakes head*

  8. April says:

Lol! They’re just what we call uhm, repetitive blah and I hate it too. It’s pointless. It’s not too much of emotions but too much idiocy. Hahaha! I’m so mean. That’s usual for beginners who don’t know the netiquette yet.

    • Mimi says:

Hahaha, too much idiocy, I can’t agree more. Facebook is turning more and more into myspace now, it makes me sad :(

  9. Lianne says:

Oooh it’s my first time in your blog! Nice site you have in here :D

Wow, whoever she is, she should definitely grow up. I expect the overly use of !! from young, immature people.

What you wrote on his wall was funny. Haha. I wish she would see what you wrote. :)

    Take care!

    • Mimi says:

      Thank you :)

I feel the same way about those girls as well, and I think they got my hint. Less fat smiley faces and !!!, but the way they type still makes them look like they’re 12. Oh well.

  10. Regine says:

Well, I kind of dislike smilies anyway. I think only one ” :-) ” is enough and it doesn’t distract you from what you’re reading. The examples you gave us make it difficult for me to keep on paying attention to the text. I normally stop reading those right away.

Regine´s last blog post..Updates in life and some randomness

    • Mimi says:

As much as I love smilies, I try not to abuse them because like you said, it makes it hard to read the text. The fat smilies I gave in the examples look extra retarded because I had to detach the chins from the eyes, or else they’d turn out like :) )))))

      • Mimi says:

I thought the image smilies would replace the : ), but I guess not.

  11. Melissa says:

I didn’t know that type of typing was anime related, I just figured people had mental issues or sporadically forgot how to type.

As for the word additives the only one I know is ‘kawaii’ I think I use it right but if you ever spot me mucking it up poke me with a stick or somethin’

For reference to fat smiley typers, the smiley you’re looking for is :D USE IT!

    • Mimi says:

Lol, well that too, but it’s just that it was at an anime forum where I first discovered that people could type so moronically, so I tend to associate lack of typing skills with anime :/

They like their smilies fat and gorgeous, and they won’t settle for anything with less and two chins D:

  12. Gel says:

It’s quite amusing that you speak your mind without apprehensions and that’s one thing I like about your blog entries. They’re very much direct to the point! I’ve seen the usual “:))” coz of the Yahoo messenger emoticon that some people get used to typing but not those types of multiple-chin smilies, though. That’s just… TOO MUCH.

    • Mimi says:

Well I only do when it comes to things that most people can agree on. I already have enough heated arguments in real life, so I thought I could spare myself the fire of an intense debate on my blog.

But yes, NO TO MULTIPLE-CHIN SMILIES. I should go petition for that on facebook or something.

  13. Mimi says:

HAYYYY OMG!!!!!!!! I sooooo agree with you, omg I know, girl :) )))))))))))))))!!!!!!!!!!

Lol. But yes, sometimes it can be annoying. I don’t really see too many people do the million-chinned smiley face thing but I have seen COLLEGE students typing “my” like “miigh” I’m like excuse me? Did you mean my or might?! The hell? Whatever. People do too much. It’s so simple to type regularly and as if you had sense. I used to dO tHiS when I was younger but after a few months, I gained some sense lol.

    • Mimi says:

Pff, how and why do people type “my” like “miigh”? Not only is it ridiculous, you need to press 3 extra keys! People need to type sensibly. -_-

  14. Ongaku says:

I have seen it… occasionally, but thank god I have yet to see someone do it all the time. It would drive me crazy.

At least on msn, you can have real smilies xD

    Ongaku´s last blog post..Pictures

    • Mimi says:

I don’t mind the text smilies, as long as people can use them appropriately and not try to fatten them up. I feel bad for the smilies :(

  15. Megori says:

Lol. Came across your blog from Ongaku’s and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this entry. It’s so true, thus adding to the crack of it all. It would be great if people would realize the double, triple, quad (or more) chins on the smile faces are just…um, yeah. I sometimes do it to spite others. Haha!
But yes! Thank you for the lovely entry. It has made my day so far.

    • Mimi says:

Thank you for visiting, and I’m glad you enjoyed my post :)
Haha, I’d to it to spite others, but it’d probably annoy myself more than it’d annoy them.

  16. Samantha says:

Don’t mean to make this such a short comment but I just wanted to let you know that I love this layout! That font looks super somehow…I need to go font hunting again…i have blah fonts :P

    • Mimi says:

Thank you! The font is called “Candice”, and you can find it at dafont.com

      Hope this helps!

  17. Melle says:

“I think you’re smiley face is FAT and has too many chins and needs to call Jenny Craig ASAP” this is just too funny,., I’ve never been to any japanese forums before, but i’ve been on a korean forum and it’s just gaaaahd.. CRAZY..

ayhoo, if ever you’ll drop by my site, the password for my post is: whatcanmelsay

    • Mimi says:

Maybe bad typing is a fobby Asian thing then? I don’t want to generalize, because I know that not all fobby Asians type like that. I guess the only thing we can do is just avoid places like that.

  18. Cat says:

Haha! A smiley with too many chins is a funny way to think of that! Luckily, I don’t see the multiple exclamation marks and all caps that often, otherwise I’d be really bothered too. The “kya” and “nya” thing is really annoying to me too.

Cat´s last blog post..Luck, love, and wants

    • Mimi says:

“Kya” and “nya” should only be used if
      1) You’re an adorable 5-year old
      2) You’re a cat
      3) You’re an adorable 5-year old cat

Otherwise, it just makes you sounds like you choked on hot sauce.

  19. rikuka says:

    OHMYGOSSSH MIMI!!!!! YOU ARE SOO MEAN nyaaa DDD;

wow.. even just writing that facetiously made me feel really stupid.

anyway, girl you need to slap a ho! (or two)
haha your response was hilarious. i really hope they read it.
& man you don’t even want to hear me get started on all that weirdo japanese talk.. I wonder what native Japanese speakers think about it. I mean those are the people the nyanya-ers are trying to impress right? Hmmm is it working..? no, i bet not.

    rikuka´s last blog post..hair cut

    • Mimi says:

      PSHH, I KNOW!!!!! teeheeheehee xDDDDD

I think I lose a couple thousand brain cells writing the above sentence. I feel bad for the native Japanese if they ever saw them type. I’d hate to see my native language get butchered :(

  20. Ms.Candyblush says:

lol it’s just too weird when it’s like that @_@

  21. Lisa says:

haha, I haven’t seen anyone use smilies like that yet, I guess it’s only a matter of time before I see some of my facebook friends use them though (even if they are older than 20, lol). I love the message you wrote on his wall though, hilarious! I really hope those girls see it :p

Lisa´s last blog post..Don’t miss your bus!

    • Mimi says:

Oh lucky. I’ve never noticed anyone typing like that either… until I saw those girls. I think they did see the message, because their smiley faces definitely lost some weight :P

  22. Larissa says:

I agree with you, those smilies do look fat. :/

Your wall post was just the best! Maybe that will teach them that they just look stupid when they type like that. :D

Larissa´s last blog post..Valentines Day Fun!

    • Mimi says:

Haha, I sure hope so. They’re probably thinking “WTF is wrong with that girl” when they saw it, but good news! Their smiley faces lost weight :D

  23. Crystal says:

HAHA that was priceless, obese smiley faces! Sometimes I catch myself trailing my lettersssssssss *ahem* and delete it just in time.

I think the shock emoticon can have two O’s, maximum =OO but c’est tout.

    Exclamation overkill is v. annoying.

Crystal´s last blog post..Too Much Leg

  24. Ai~ says:

*laughs heartily* Your sarcasm never fails to make my day. You’re always on point, and you say everything very eloquently. ;)

I’m starting to think now how OC I am — my right eyebrow twitches in irritation when I see three exclamation points in official signs (like flyers or advertisements posted on campus grounds). Sooo annoying! Can’t people learn proper punctuation?!? Makes me feel so frustrated as a grammar teacher, lol.
