Your Music Sucks

I have a habit of opening multiple tabs on Firefox at once, then slowly browse through each tab at my own pace and leisure. So you can imagine my joy when I hear the Jonas Brothers in all their teeny-bopping glory blasting through my speakers suddenly after opening 15 or so new tabs. Do you have any idea how annoying it is to go through each tab, scroll up and down to find the tiny, nearly non-existent music player just so I can stop Nick, Joe, or Kevin from singing one more verse of “When You Look Me In The Eyes1“.

Every time I find the culprit site, I have the mad urge to leave a comment on it saying “TAKE DOWN YOUR DAMN MUSIC PLAYER!” because honestly, no one cares. If I wanted to listen to music, I’ll listen to my OWN music, thank you very much. I don’t care if you think this one song is so awesome, I don’t want that damn thing blasting through my speakers, scaring the begeezus out of me. Did it every occur to you, those of you who have one of these annoying players on your site, that your readers might already be perfectly content listening to music on their computers?

So my advice to you is this: take the music player off2. Tada! Seriously, this isn’t rocket science. If people want to listen to that song, they’ll go listen to it, without you shoving it in their face, or in this case, their ears.

  1. Ok, I know this is an old song, but it’s their only song that I can actually stand, and even then, I don’t like it all that much.
  2. Only if it’s an automatic player, those have got to die. But if it’s a manual music player, sure, keep it

Well said. :) I absolutely loath auto play music. Is it really necessary to FORCE the visitor into listening what you like? That’s like being in the car, having someone change the radio station without agreeing to it – so they can hear what they want, not what you want.

    • Mimi says:

Exactly, the least these people can do is set the music players to NOT be automatic, and if I can be arsed to listen to their music, then I will.

  2. Liz says:

yeah I agree. I think it might be best if it doesnt play automatically that way if we’re interested, we can listen to it :)

    • Mimi says:

I agree, I’ve updated my post to reflect this.

I also dislike this. Although I do the same thing, I’ve been fortunate to not run into a site like that lately. I think it has been a couple of weeks since the last time it happened.

I think if people are doing this because they sincerely want to introduce/show off their music to their readers, they should blog about it instead. It adds more content to their page, and also gives their readers more of an incentive to stay on their page.

I can understand the motive behind why people do it, but what they don’t realize is that they’re causing an inconvenience to other people. If they wanted to show off their music, why not have a section or some posts introducing their favorite albums and artists, with a music sample that doesn’t play automatically? I guess what irks me (and many other people) the most is the fact that the music plays without our permission.

I usually don’t care if a person has a music player on their site as long as it isn’t set to play automatically. I really hate that, especially since I’m usually already playing something.

What caught my attention with this entry was the avatar, is that from NANA? *grin*

Well anyway,, while reading your entry, I was smiling the entire time because I felt the same way and like you, I open multiple tabs whenever I blog hop or something, and it annoys me to hell especially if the song is really that super duper irritating!!! Oh well, I know, they should take down the player or maybe just not autoplay it or something.

    • Mimi says:

Lol, I actually have no idea. I just thought the icon was funny :P
But yeah, autoplay = death. Seriously.

In Vista you can click on the sound icon in the tray and bring up the mixer. Then You can mute your browser and continue listening to winamp or aimp, etc.

    • Mimi says:

This would be a great advice, except for the fact that the option to mute your browser doesn’t show up until the sound begins playing :( It’d be great if I could mute it from the beginning, so I won’t have to hear a thing.
